Rosalie Carey
Rosalie Carey, of Whangārei, received the Insignia of a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to the theatre. Mrs Carey co-founded the Globe Theatre in Dunedin in 1961. It was the first purpose-built theatre for professional repertory in New Zealand. The theatre has helped develop and foster actors, directors, and writers. She was involved in coaching hundreds of young performers in voice and action and in all aspects of the theatre, including acting, making costumes, and prop construction. She is a member of the Whangarei Writers Workshop. She was active in the Playwrights Association of New Zealand for 20 years and wrote the history, A Theatre in the House: The Carey’s Globe. Mrs Carey also stages plays, poetry readings and writers’ meeting to raise funds for Writers in Prison and other charities
