John Selkirk, of Mount Eden
John Selkirk received the Insignia of a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to photography. Mr Selkirk worked for 42 years as a staff photographer, firstly for The Dominion, then The Dominion Post in Wellington. More recently he has worked in Auckland for the Fairfax Auckland Photographic Bureau. Through his work he has contributed substantially to New Zealand’s pictorial social history. His photographs have been published in many books. ‘Through the Lens, published in 2003, covers 30 years of his photographs from 1970 to 1999. His work on major news events such as the 2009 Samoan tsunami is well known, it is for his sport photography that he is especially noted, in particular he has photographed the dramatic moments of the 1981 Springbok Tour, numerous All Black tours, Olympic and Commonwealth Games, and international cricket and basketball.
