Ian Warrington, Palmerston North, CNZM
For services to science. In a career spanning more than 40 years, Professor Warrington is internationally known for his research into horticultural, forestry and field crop plants, and particularly for his work on apples, kiwifruit and ornamental plants. He was Chief Executive of HortResearch, from 1996 to 2002, the period that gold kiwifruit, one of New Zealand’s most successful export earners, was commercialised. In 2002 he became Professor of Horticultural Science at Massey University and from 2004 to 2010 served as Deputy Vice-Chancellor. He was instrumental in building strong links between the University and the Palmerston North community, and has fostered its international links. Professor Warrington received the Royal Society of New Zealand’s TK Sidey Medal in 1984, before being made a Fellow of the Society a decade later. He is also a Fellow of the New Zealand, American and International Societies of Horticultural Science.
