For services to health. Professor McCowan is an internationally respected research obstetrician at the University of Auckland and a renowned clinician at National Women’s Hospital. She spends many hours working in a voluntary capacity for the community group, New Zealand Action on Preeclampsia, travelling at her own expense to provide workshops to doctors and midwives about this serious complication of pregnancy. She chaired the Review of Perinatal Mortality at National Women’s Hospital for many years, providing a popular educational forum for midwives and obstetricians. Professor McCowan is co-leader of a large international consortium of researchers undertaking research into high-risk pregnancies and is also a lead investigator in reducing the risk of stillbirth in New Zealand.
