Ms Jane Bruning, of Auckland, ONZM (Honorary)for services to people with HIV
Ms Bruning was diagnosed with HIV in 1988. She is the National Coordinator for Positive Women Inc., a support network for women and families living with HIV or AIDS in New Zealand. She initiated a Positive Speakers programme to help women speak publicly about HIV. She created the first bi-annual HIV Family Retreat, led the first National HIV Destigmatising Campaign for Women, and initiated the first HIV Women’s Seminar. She introduced the Global Female Condom Campaign in New Zealand and established the Rose House, a drop-in centre that provides a safe, confidential space for women and families living with HIV, as well as offering access to a social worker, a health promoter and peer support. She has trained health professionals on how to work with expectant mothers living with HIV.
