Mr Pembroke (Pem) Bird, of Murupara, MNZM for services to education and Māori
Mr Bird was part of the Te Paepae Motuhake working group that advised on the development of the Māori Language Strategy. He is a member of the Ministry of Education’s National Cross Sector Forum on Raising Achievement and served on the Education Funding Review advisory group. He leads a rural school in Murupara township, where he has grown the multilingual and multicultural curriculum and overseen academic improvements. Mr Bird is past Chairman of Waka Moemoe, Co-Chairman of Nga Kura a Iwi, past Chairman of Te Ha o Te Ora Creating Safe Communities, a member of the Bay of Plenty Police Iwi Advisory Group, and Chair of several marae organisations.
