Mr Julian Shields, of Nelson, QSM, for services to the community
Mr Shields set up the Nelson branch of Habitat for Humanity, which has so far built 23 houses for families in need. He served as Chair and project manager, sourcing donated materials, recruiting volunteers and tradesmen, and delivering presentations to raise awareness. Previously, he helped establish Altrusa House, which provides accommodation for relatives of out-of-town patients at Nelson hospital. He has been a volunteer host at the Nelson Mission to Seafarers and is involved with Grace Church of Richmond. Mr Shields travelled to India at his own expense to help with the recovery efforts following the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami.
