Mr James Doherty, of Murupara, for services to Māori and conservation
Mr James Doherty has been a lead contributor to developing the matauranga o te ngahere o Tuawhenua/Ruatahuna (forest lore/knowledge), an assembly of the traditional knowledge of the species of the lands and forests of the Tuawhenua.
He is Chair of the Tuhoe Tuawhenua Trust. He was a member of the Nga Matapopore Māori Research Advisory Group, the Te Herenga Regional Network, and the Claims Committee of Te Runanganui o Te Ikawhenua.
He is a delegate for the Tuhoe Manawaru Tribunal and was Chair of the Kaingaroa Village Council. He represented New Zealand at the inaugural Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities Dialogue Workshop in Panama City.
Mr Doherty has co-authored a number of scientific peer-reviewed papers and book chapters, and co-presented at conferences with Manaaki Whenua researchers.
