Battle of the River Plate Commemorations
December 13 was the 75th anniversary of the Battle of the River Plate. In Auckland, the Governor-General, Lt Gen The Rt Hon Sir Jerry Mateparae laid a wreath at Achilles Point, attended a Mayoral reception at the Town Hall and presided at a parade down Queen Street, reenacting the welcome given for the New Zealand crew of HMS Achilles in February 1940. The special guests for the day were the last remaining Achilles veterans, who then proceeded to HMNZS Te Kaha with the Governor General for a medal ceremony and lunch.
