Dame Cindy and Dr Davies continued their official visit to Tokelau with a day of poignant celebrations on Nukunonu. Their Excellencies had the pleasure of spending time with elders, women, and church leaders, as well as with tamariki – hearing about the community’s aspirations, and the values that shape life on the atoll. Those values – grounded in shared responsibility, and a commitment to family and collective wellbeing – have been at the heart of Tokelau’s enduring relationship with New Zealand over this past century.
During their time on Nukunonu, Their Excellencies also had the opportunity to visit Matiti School, St Joseph’s Hospital, and the Tokelau Renewable Energy Expansion Project, which will enable Tokelau to once again generate the vast majority of its electricity from renewable sources.
