On a beautiful winter Wellington Sunday morning, Dame Cindy joined the inaugural Mission to Seafarers service at Old St Pauls.
The Mission to Seafarers is an international organisation providing practical, emotional, and spiritual support to seafarers. The Mission has had a ministry in Wellington for more than 125 years and continues to aid those who visit the city via its ports.
The service gathered representatives from across the maritime community to give thanks to those who continue to serve at sea, and to honour the service and sacrifice of seafarers who have gone before.
Dame Cindy delivered a reading from the Recollections of Merchant Navy Apprentice John Gregson, 1924-2016. The reading spoke of the camaraderie shared between seafarers in times of war and the terrible cost they endured.
