Born in 1866, Sir John Poynder Dickson-Poynder Islington, 1st Baron, succeeded his great uncle as Baronet in 1884.
He sat in Parliament 1892-1900 for the Conservatives and the Liberals. He served as ADC to Lord Methuen in the Boer War, winning the DSO as a despatch rider. He was elevated to the peerage in 1910.
He became Governor of New Zealand in 1910, and also became the first Governor to reside in the current Government House, Wellington. He resigned his post after 30 months to become chairman of the Royal Commission on Public Service in India.
Lord Islington later became chairman of Britain's National Savings Committee. He died in 1936.
