Sir George Augustus Constantine Phipps, 2nd Marquess of Normanby, was born in 1819, the only son of the 1st Marquess who had been successively Governor of Jamaica, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, Colonial Secretary and Home Secretary.
He entered Parliament in 1847, sitting in the House of Commons as Earl of Mulgrave after serving with the Scots Fusilier Guards. He was Lt Governor of Nova Scotia 1858-63 when he returned to England to take up his father's titles.
He was Governor of Queensland before taking up office in New Zealand. Following this, he became Governor of Victoria until 1884. He returned to England to take his seat in the House of Lords as a Liberal-Unionist. He died in 1890.
