This morning, Dr Davies attended the annual SS Ōtaki commemorative wreath laying at Ōtaki College. This event honours those who lost their lives in the 1917 sinking of the SS Ōtaki and remembers all who have been lost at sea.
The theme for this year’s ceremony was centred on women at sea in times of war. With yesterday being International Women’s Day, it was fitting to reflect on the important, but sometimes forgotten, role women have played in the story of the Merchant Navy in wartime.
As Dr Davies said in his speech: 'Everyday people don't go out in search of opportunities to be courageous - more often than not they will find courage when circumstances demand they do - whether it be in peace or war.'
