This afternoon, Dame Cindy hosted a reception to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the New Zealand Sign Language Act 2006. The Act established New Zealand Sign Language as an official language of New Zealand, providing for its use in legal proceedings and protecting it as a linguistic and cultural taonga.
Dame Cindy reflected on how this has shaped our history in her speech, saying: ‘Our people are our nation’s greatest resource.
