Ms Anne Lee, of Auckland, MNZM for services to refugees, migrants and education
Ms Anne Lee is manager of the Umma Trust, where she provides annual support to around 6,000 former refugees. Her initiatives have included working with VTNZ to deliver learner tests in mother-tongue languages. She taught at the Mangere Refugee Resettlement Centre, established the Volunteer Tutor Scheme, and trained tutors to work with teachers with large numbers of international students in their classrooms. Ms Lee produced international student teaching resources and advised on the Ministry of Education’s refugee policy, establishing Refugee Education Advisors who could liaise with parents and communities. She helped create the International Students Code of Practice, and was Chief Advisor Adult Literacy and Refugee Education Coordinator at the Ministry of Education.
