Professor Peter Skegg
Professor Peter Skegg, of Dunedin, received the Insignia of a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to medical law. Professor Peter Skegg is an international leader in medical law and his book Law, Ethics and Medicine is recognised as the first major work on this subject in the Commonwealth. He was instrumental in setting up the Masters of Bioethics and Health Law Course at the University of Otago. He serves on a number of international editorial boards, including all four of the leading journals in law and medicine. In 2006 he co-edited the textbook ‘Medical Law in New Zealand’, which is the first major treatise on medical law in New Zealand. Professor Skegg has advised a number of government agencies, health organisations, and medical societies on medico-legal issues, and served on numerous committees and reviews. Notable features include his work on informed consent following the Cartwright Inquiry, his service on the Core Health Services Committee, his key role in advising on the Code of Health and Disability Services Consumers’ Rights, and his advisory role on human tissue legislation.
