Dr Sabine Fenton, MNZM, Auckland
For services to translation and interpreting. Dr Sabine Fenton has been a pioneer in the field of translation and interpreting in New Zealand. She established the Centre for Translation and Interpreting at Auckland University of Technology in 1998, and was its Director until she retired in 2005. She remains as a research fellow at the centre. She revived the New Zealand Society of Translators from an organisation that had been in abeyance to one that now has more than 400 members. She was President of this organisation from 1990 to 1995. Over the last 20 years, she has raised awareness about interpreting within the professional community and conducted seminars in many centres. She has acted as an interpreter in the High Court and run seminars for judges. She has contributed to several books, and edited ‘Translation – a Tool for Change in the Pacific’. Dr Fenton is an honorary research fellow at the University of Auckland and continues to work as an interpreter, translator and consultant.
