Lindsay Galloway, Christchurch, MNZM, for services to Chatham Islands agriculture
Mr Lindsay Galloway, through his former position at the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, and continuing in a voluntarily capacity following his retirement in 1992, has helped the farmers of the Chatham Islands to greatly improve their farming practices and production. Mr Galloway joined the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries in 1956 and in 1968 was appointed to assess farming in the Chatham Islands and prepare a plan for implementing change. He worked to create more effective stock management, improve sheep and cattle breeds, and foster the structural improvement of farm buildings and yards. With his help, Chatham Islands farmers were able to meet all targets in these areas over a 40-year period. He arranged for Chatham Islands children and young adults to attend long-term agricultural programmes, and many of them are now running their family farms. He worked to strengthen trade and servicing ties between the Chatham Islands and Canterbury. Mr Galloway continues to write an agricultural advice column entitled ‘Farm Focus’ for the Chatham Islands monthly newspaper.
