Bert Mackie, MNZM, Wellington.
For services to Māori. Mr Bert Mackie, of Ngā Puhi and Ngāti Wai,
was a member of the Board of Māori Affairs and more recently Te Puni Kōkiri, and has served a number of Ministers of Māori Affairs over the last 25 years. He served in the New Zealand Navy in the Korean War, then joined the Police. Following this he entered the private sector, where as an entrepreneur he helped bring Māori big bands to the entertainment circuit in New Zealand. These bands included Mahora and Billy Peter of the Volcanics. He managed the Waitangi Copthorne Hotel out of a period of financial crisis. He was also active in Māori rugby as a player and coach, and was manager of the Māori All Blacks' overseas tour in 1988. He has also supported young Māori sportspeople and Māori arts. Mr Mackie is a Justice of the Peace.
