Carol Quirk, Opotiki, QSM, for services to surf life saving
In 1992 Ms Carol Quirk became the first female to be appointed National President of Surf Life Saving New Zealand, having already been the first female captain and manager of two national teams. She has been involved with surf lifesaving in a voluntary capacity since 1968. She has represented New Zealand internationally in Sri Lanka and the UK in 1974 and 1982 respectively. She has held roles as coach, examiner and board or committee member at club, district and national levels for more than 40 years. She was a member of the New Zealand Sports Tribunal from 2003 to 2010. She is currently a trustee for the Sport Bay of Plenty Trust and the Motu Trails Charitable Trust. Ms Quirk was Deputy Director of the New Zealand Historic Places Trust from 1984 to 1995 and has been a member of conservation review boards for government buildings. She was awarded life memberships for Surf Life Saving New Zealand in 2010, and the New Zealand Historic Places Trust in 1995.
