John Ledgard
John Ledgard, of Rangiora, received the Insignia of a Companion of The Queen's Service Order for services to forestry. Mr Ledgard is an expert on forestry in the South Island high country, in particular the management of native and introduced trees and herbaceous species, and the control and management of wilding conifers. He was a scientist with the New Zealand Forest Research Institute for more than 30 years, where he has contributed to a number of influential programmes on best practice in silviculture, soil conservation, and wilding conifer management. His scientific research has been an integral part of the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment report, Change in the High Country: Environmental Stewardship and Tenure Review. He has written two booklets on wilding prevention and control. His interest in the use of trees on marginal land led to pioneering work establishing native plants by direct seeding at Tiromoana Bush. He chairs the Ashley-Rakahuri Rivercare Group. Mr Ledgard has managed the Himalayan Trust’s afforestation project in the Khumbu region of Nepal since 1989.
