Simon Chaffey, Picton, QSM
For services to the community. Mr Chaffey has been involved in the Kaikoura and Picton communities for many years. He is the co-founder and spokesperson of Future @ Picton, which encourages and promotes the future development of the town. He was a member of the Kekerengu/Clarence Branch of the Kaikoura Agricultural and Pastoral Association for 20 years, and the Meat and Wool Executive and Shearing Committee of Federated Farmers New Zealand. He was involved with the building of the Kekerengu District Community Centre, a member of the Vestry Committee of St George's Anglican Church in Kekerengu, and a member of the community working group which developed a tourism strategy for the Kaikoura District Council. In 1965, due to a ski plane accident, he became a paraplegic and was the first patient in the Christchurch Spinal Unit. He was a member of the New Zealand Paraplegic Team at the British Commonwealth Paraplegic Games in Dunedin in 1974. He was appointed as a Justice of the Peace in 1977.
