Sandra Coney, of Auckland
Sandra Coney received the Insignia of a Companion of The Queen's Service Order for services to women's health. Ms Coney has made a significant contribution to women’s health for more than 35 years. From 1974 to 1984 she was a counsellor for the Auckland Medical Aid Trust, and in 1984 co-founded Fertility Action, now the Women’s Health Action Trust. In 1986 she co-authored a Metro magazine article, 'An Unfortunate Experiment at National Women’s', which resulted in the Commission of Inquiry into the treatment of cervical cancer at National Women’s Hospital. She later became a member of the Expert Group that established the National Cervical Screening Programme and the Policy Advisory Committee. She has served on many national health committees including the Health Research Council's Women's Health Committee and the Health Sector Reference Group that developed the New Zealand Health Strategy. She currently chairs the PHARMAC Consumer Advisory Committee. Ms Coney is a widely published columnist, and the author of several books on women’s health, women's history, and the history of Piha.
