John Hargraves
John Hargraves, of Timaru, received the Insignia of a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to organ restoration. Mr Hargraves is considered a world authority on the restoration of pipe organs from the 19th and early 20th centuries. He joined the South Island Organ Company in 1968 and has been a member of its board for 40 years. He played a significant part in the building and restoration of more than 150 organs, including the 1878 Halmshaw and Son organ in the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament in Christchurch, and the 1906 Norman and Beard organ in the Wellington Town Hall. Mr Hargraves also strives to ensure that instruments created by New Zealand and Australian organ builders are preserved, and encourages churches to restore instruments of historical significance, rather than replace them.
