Joseph Churchward
Joseph Churchward, of Wellington, received the Queen's Service Medal for services to typography. Mr Churchward has made a significant contribution to the international typography design industry, and has worked to raise the profile of New Zealand design. He founded Churchward International Typefaces in Wellington in 1969, and has handcrafted more than 600 original typefaces that feature on billboards, record sleeves, newspapers, and in digital media worldwide. A special exhibition of his work was held by the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa in 2008, and a biography of his life and work was published in 2009. He has won numerous awards including a silver award in the Japanese Morisawa Award Type Design Competition in 1984 and the John Britten Award in the BeST Design Awards in 2009.
