Derek Round
Derek Round, of Masterton, received the Insignia of a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to journalism. Mr Round has had a distinguished career in journalism. He served as the Reuters News Agency Bureau Chief in Singapore and Hong Kong and was the Asia Correspondent for the New Zealand Press Association (1973-77). He played a prominent role in presenting Asia to New Zealanders and his reports, while accompanying the first visit of a New Zealand Prime Minister to China, gave New Zealanders new insights into that country. He was later NZPA's Political Editor, and its Fleet Street-based Chief European Correspondent and Editor (1984-89). He is the author of several biographies. He is a former Chairperson and trustee of the New Zealand Portrait Gallery and has served as Chair of the Martinborough Community Board and was a member of the Wairarapa Polytechnic Council and the South Wairarapa Enterprise Board.
