John Nankervis
John Nankervis, of Wellington, received the Insignia of a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to mountaineering. Mr Nankervis has been involved in mountaineering for more than 40 years. He has completed more than 20 first ascents in the Mt Cook and Westland national parks and more than 20 first ascents elsewhere in the Southern Alps. He has provided mountain skills and safety training for new mountaineers with clubs, in particular the Tararua Tramping Club and was a member of Ruapehu Ski Patrol for many years. He served on the national executive of the New Zealand Alpine Club, of which he has been President and is now a life member. He has served three terms on the Tongariro-Taupō Conservation Board and 10 years on the New Zealand Conservation Authority. Mr Nankervis has also been the honorary solicitor and a member of the Tongariro Natural History Society for more than 25 years.
