David McPhail
David McPhail, of Christchurch, received the Insignia of an Officer of the NZ Order of Merit for services to television and the theatre, on 3 September 2008. Since receiving The Queen’s Service Medal for Public Services in 1992, he has continued to work as a writer, performer, and director in television and on stage and has focused on bringing New Zealand plays to the stage and working with local playwrights. He has had lead roles in A Long Days Journey into Night, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, and Travesties. He directed Ian Cross’s The God Boy, produced the critically acclaimed Boys at the Beach and wrote and performed his own production of Muldoon; a one-man show for the Auckland Festival and Wellington’s Downstage Theatre. He has received more than eight awards for his work as an actor and director.
