Michael Boyes
Dr Michael Boyes, of Dunedin, received the Insignia of a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to outdoor recreation and mountain safety. Dr Boyes has contributed to outdoor recreation and education in New Zealand for more than 40 years through his service to many organisations. He was the Chairperson of Education Outdoors New Zealand and a member of its executive board. He was founding Chairman of the Taranaki Outdoor Pursuits Centre and a voluntary bush-craft, risk management and abseiling instructor and course director for the New Zealand Mountain Safety Council. He contributed to firearms safety by co-authoring Deer Hunting in New Zealand: Safety Lessons from the Field. He is the Chair of Outdoor New Zealand and the New Zealand Mountain Safety Council’s Research Committee. He is editor of the New Zealand Journal of Outdoor Education. Dr Boyes received the New Zealand Mountain Safety Council’s 25th Anniversary Award for services to the council in 1991 and a SPARC Supreme Award for Service to Outdoor recreation in 2007.
