The Governor-General serves as patron of a number of national organisations, recognising and supporting their important work across communities. This support may include raising awareness, celebrating milestones and hosting events at Government House Wellington or Government House Auckland.
Please note that the Governor-General cannot be involved in governance or fundraising initiatives, or used in campaign or political communications.
Patronage usually lasts for the length of a Governor-General’s term.
Eligibility
Organisations should demonstrate:
- A clear focus on national interests or wellbeing
- A cultural, community, social or sporting purpose
- A solid record of achievement across a minimum of five years
- Financial security
The organisation’s purpose and activities should align with the Government House objective:
“The office of the Governor-General is strengthened as a symbol of national unity and leadership.”
Organisations that hold royal patronage should not apply for vice-regal patronage.
Applying for patronage
Patronage applications will re-open in October 2026 but decisions will not be made until the new Governor-General's term begins.
