I am deeply saddened by the devastating scenes of flash flooding in Nepal and China. The true extent of this event and its impact on people, including New Zealanders, is still being understood – however, it is clear that many lives and livelihoods have been affected by this unfathomable tragedy.
For many years, Nepal and New Zealand have shared a profound friendship. New Zealanders have often travelled to Nepal to marvel in its natural beauty and have enjoyed the warmth and hospitality of its peoples. We have a lively and deeply valued Nepalese community in New Zealand to whom I extend my aroha and support.
On behalf of all New Zealanders, I express my greatest sympathies to all those impacted by this terrible tragedy.
