I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Sir Sam Neill KNZM OBE.
Sir Sam was one of New Zealand’s great storytellers – admired here, across the Tasman, and around the world. Through his work and the way he carried himself, he reflected so many qualities New Zealanders hold dear: humility, generosity, decency, and a deep commitment to his craft.
It was my great honour to invest Sir Sam as a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2022, recognising his lifetime of outstanding service to film.
Sir Sam helped strengthen the cultural ties between New Zealand and Australia, and lifted New Zealand’s profile on the world stage. He did so with grace, mana, and unmistakable wit.
Dr Davies and I extend our deepest condolences to his whānau, friends, colleagues, and all who loved and admired him.
