Waitakere Civic Centre Opening Celebrations Dinner
Your Worship Mayor Bob Harvey, Ministers of the Crown, Hon Judith Tizard, Hon Chris Carter, Hon David Cunliffe, Members of Parliament, Lynne Pillay, Councillors, Trust Chairs, Laureates, Distinguished Guests.
It is a matter of great pleasure for me on my first visit to Auckland to be able to be here on this auspicious occasion.
I issue greetings in the languages of the realm of New Zealand as well as English - Maori, Rarotongan Maori, Niuean and Tokelauan - Kia Ora, Kia Orana, Fakalofa Lahi Atu, Taloha Ni.
The new Civic Centre, with its combination of the futuristic and pragmatic is the new landmark for Henderson. The opening of this stunning complex signals Waitakere's coming of age as a modern city.
For that, I issue congratulations.
But it takes more than bricks and mortar - or metal and glass - for a city's heart to beat. It takes people, and it takes spirit - both of which are here in abundance.
This new Civic Centre shows just what can be achieved with that kind of spirit, and with healthy portions of vision, determination and creativity.
Waitakere is a byword for life, energy, and endeavour. Just how much talent comes out of this city is reflected in the inaugural Grand Laureate Awards which are about to be presented.
The quality of these Laureates illustrates the vibrancy and cultural originality that is so much part of the multi-ethnic environment that makes this city special, yet one typical of New Zealand.
I thank you for inviting me here this evening.
Tena koutou katoa.
