Emeritus Professor Gil Barbezat, of Dunedin, MNZM for services to gastroenterology
Emeritus Professor Gil Barbezat is internationally renowned in his specialist field of gastroenterology. He developed the Department of Gastroenterology at Dunedin Hospital, while also developing an academic gastroenterology unit at the Dunedin School of Medicine. He represented New Zealand on the World Gastroenterology Body, and was President of the New Zealand Society of Gastroenterology. He chaired the Specialist Advisory Committee for Gastroenterology of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. He developed guidelines for management of Helicobacter Pylori and Dyspepsia in New Zealand. Professor Barbezat was Patron of Crohn’s Colitis Support Group, Deputy Chair of Age Concern Otago, medical advisor to Healthcare Otago Charitable Trust, and is Patron of Otago Medical Research Foundation.
