Kitty McKinley, Wellington, MNZM
For services to youth and the community. Ms McKinley is the founder and Manager of Challenge 2000 Trust, a Wellington organisation that provides development and social work services for young people. The Trust assists more than 3,000 young people a year. Through its auspices she has developed an alternative education programme for young people excluded from mainstream education and youth development centres for young people with complex needs. Ms McKinley has also been a supervisor for Youth Line and the Mary Potter Hospice and many other community and governmental organisations. She was a social worker at Catholic Social Services from 1977 to 1986, and was instrumental in providing social work services to young people in state care and in prison.
