Robert Boas
Associate Professor Robert Boas, of Kohimarama, received the Insignia of an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to medicine, in particular pain management. He is a leading pioneer in pain management and has set a bench mark for its best practice. He instituted a learning laboratory for teaching safe anaesthesia blocks. His work in analgesics has contributed to surgery patients having a quick and relatively pain free recovery. He founded New Zealand’s first pain clinic at Auckland Hospital and helped to establish a similar clinic in Dunedin a few years later. Professor Boas received international recognition through receiving an Honorary Fellowship from the Faculty of Pain Medicine of the Australasian College of Anaesthetists and the Royal College of Anaesthetists.
