The Governor-General, Lt Gen The Rt Hon Sir Jerry Mateparae, will present the New Zealand Memorial Cross to the parents of the late Lt Tim O’Donnell DSD at Government House in Wellington on Monday 23 April 2012.
The ceremony is at 2pm and media who wish to attend need to contact Antony Paltridge, Public Affairs Manager, on 021 470 583 or 04 382 0827, before 12noon on 23 April to register their attendance.
Lt O’Donnell was killed in action in Afghanistan on 3 August 2010 when a New Zealand Provincial Reconstruction Team patrol he was leading was ambushed by insurgents in the Bamyan Province.
The New Zealand Memorial Cross is awarded to the next of kin of all New Zealand servicemen and women who were killed while on war service or operational service overseas, or who subsequently died of wounds received while on war service or operational service overseas, since the commencement of World War Two.
