The Governor-General, Lt Gen The Rt Hon Sir Jerry Mateparae, will appoint the new Government at a ceremony at Government House in Wellington at 10.30am on Wednesday 14 December 2011.
During the ceremony, Sir Jerry Mateparae will exercise his reserve powers to reappoint the Rt Hon John Key as Prime Minister and as an Executive Councillor.
The ceremony will also involve the appointment of a new Executive Council; a meeting of the Executive Council at which councillors will take their oaths and affirmations; and the appointment of Executive Councillors to Ministerial portfolios.
After the ceremony, the Prime Minister will be available to answer questions.
Media wanting to attend this ceremony must register their attendance by 5pm on Tuesday 13 December, providing the names of those attending. Media representatives must be on site by 9.50am and must have appropriate identification. Media that are not on site by that time will not be admitted to Government House. Media are also reminded that a reasonable standard of dress is expected.
The Executive Council is the highest formal instrument of government. It is created by the Letters Patent that also establish the Office of Governor-General and is part of the executive branch of government that carries out formal acts of government.
