The Governor-General to visit Gisborne

The Governor-General, Lt Gen The Rt Hon Sir Jerry Mateparae, and Lady Janine Mateparae, will undertake a regional visit to Gisborne this week.


Their visit officially begins on Wednesday 11 June when Sir Jerry and Lady Janine Mateparae will meet volunteers at Gisborne Sunshine Service before joining mayor of Gisborne Meng Foon for a working lunch.


Sir Jerry will formally launch the Te Hā Sestercentennial Trust at a function on Thursday 12 June. The Trust is responsible for implementing commemorations for the 250th anniversary of Captain James Cook’s first voyage to New Zealand.


The Governor-General will also visit Tolaga Bay, where he will meet senior students from Tolaga Bay Area School who have recently returned from the 28th Maori Battalion Legacy Tour. He will also plant a native tree, propagated from seeds of specimens collected in the area by botanist Joseph Banks, who accompanied Captain Cook.

 
Lady Janine Mateparae will arrive in Gisborne a day earlier on Tuesday 10 June to visit a meeting of GirlGuiding Gisborne. As Patron of GirlGuiding New Zealand, Lady Janine will present awards and meet Guides, Brownies and Pippins from the greater Gisborne region.
